Computing

Intention

Our Computing curriculum is stimulating and exciting.
Our Computing curriculum is broad, balanced and manageable.
Our Computing curriculum is well sequenced, progressive and memorable so children can reach their full potential.
Our Computing curriculum involves everyone.
Our Computing curriculum is nurturing and gives our children tools to be lifelong learners.
Our Computing curriculum promotes diversity and is inclusive.
Extra-curricular activities add value to our curriculum.

Implementation

Our primary intention is to ensure that all children across our school, regardless of prior experience, develop proficiency in computing. We achieve this through the teaching of three main areas of computing: e-safety, digital literacy and coding.

Summerside also provides many opportunities for pupils to implement their computing skills in a cross-curricular context. Across the school, technology is used in many different ways in a range of different lessons. For example, use of BeeBots in KS1 maths and iPads and Laptops used for researching and writing in KS2 English, History and Geography lessons.

Across the school, lessons are planned to be interactive and engaging, ensuring children develop their knowledge and build upon prior learning with each unit taught. Using the national curriculum, Computing lessons are planned to be age-appropriate and are planned to build upon prior learning in previous year groups. This allows children to deepen their computer knowledge as they progress through the school.

As practitioners, we ensure that we are familiar with a range of computing skills. This allows us to provide the children with high quality teaching and feedback during Computing lessons

In KS2, the children are able to consolidate their digital literacy skills when using Microsoft teams at home to complete a range of cross-curricular tasks set by teachers.

Impact

Our Computing curriculum is planned so that pupils have a good understanding of key concepts, knowledge, skills and vocabulary that ensures they achieve age related attainment at the end of each Key Stage. We aim to foster a love of using computers and to provide teaching that allows children to become fluent users of technology during their time at Summerside.

In Key Stage 1 and 2, the knowledge, skills and understanding objectives from the National Curriculum are taught and this ensures the children receive a broad and balanced computing curriculum. Topics are mapped out carefully so that children develop their knowledge and understanding progressively as they move through the school
